Stress can sneak up on us at the worst times: right before a big meeting, an important job interview, or an exam. Often, we’re not sure how to handle it. But there’s a simple solution—anti-stress breaks. These are moments you give yourself when you feel tension rising. Just like anxiety, stress can only build up so much before it naturally comes down. The trick is to pause before it gets too high or stays too long.

What Is an Anti-Stress Break?

An anti-stress break is any short pause that helps you reset. It could be a walk in the countryside, a stroll through the woods, or even a few minutes by the sea if you’re lucky enough to live nearby. If you’re in the city, try stepping out for a coffee or hot chocolate at a nearby café. If that’s not possible, find a quiet spot at work—a small meeting room, or even the restroom if you need privacy.

At home, you can create your own “do not disturb” sign, just like in hotels. Hang it on your door, close it, and let everyone know you need a moment. Sit down, close your eyes, and if you want, turn off the lights. This is your time.

The Power of Breathing

Let’s do this together. Sit comfortably, close your eyes, and take a deep breath in through your nose. Fill your chest and belly with air. Hold your breath for three seconds, then slowly breathe out for twice as long as you breathed in. For example, inhale for two seconds, hold for three, and exhale for four. Or inhale for three, hold for four, and exhale for six. The key is to make your exhale twice as long as your inhale.

Don’t put pressure on yourself. The goal is to let go, not to add more stress. Focus on your body, on yourself, and forget everything else for a moment. Closing your eyes helps. Do it now—there’s never a perfect time. Even if you’re busy, even if you’re at work, you can always find a moment. Your mental health matters more than what others might think.

Breathing is natural. No one can tell you not to breathe. Relaxation is just as important. If you haven’t made it a habit yet, now’s the time. You’ll notice your stress melting away.

Meditation: Your Mental Shield

Meditation is another tool that strengthens your mind. Often, we let intrusive thoughts take over. Meditation teaches you to notice a stressful thought and then let it go. It acts like a shield, blocking toxic thoughts from taking hold.

How does it work? You focus on just one thing—often your breath. If your mind wanders, gently bring it back. Here’s a tip: if you’re struggling to clear your mind, tell yourself you’re allowed to think about anything. Paradoxically, this often helps you think of nothing at all.

The breathing exercise we just did is a form of meditation. Doing it three or four times a day, whenever you feel stressed, can make a real difference.

Other Ways to Take a Break

Sometimes, a change of scene helps. Enjoy a drink you love, take a walk, or go for a run. Physical activity, even if it’s just a brisk walk, helps release built-up energy.

Massage is another great option. If you have a massage center nearby, treat yourself to a session. Even a short massage before a stressful event, like a job interview, can help you relax and perform better.

Shift Your Attention

Often, we’re stressed about an outcome—like not getting a job we really want. Try shifting your attention. Imagine you’re waiting for an interview and you accidentally spill your coffee. Suddenly, your focus is on the spill, not the interview. You become more relaxed because your mind is elsewhere. You don’t have to actually spill your drink, but you can always ask for a coffee and let your mind wander to something else for a moment. This simple shift can make the conversation flow more naturally.

Sometimes, the most unusual tricks are the most effective. Give them a try and see what works for you.
