Success often feels like a mystery, but it’s usually built on a few simple habits. Let me share with you some of the most important keys I’ve learned for growing faster and feeling better about your days.

Plan Your Days Like a Laser

The first key is to plan your life, your routines, and what you want to achieve. If you wake up without a plan, it’s easy to drift. Maybe it’s a Saturday morning, and you start something on your computer, then get distracted by another idea, and before you know it, half the day is gone and nothing concrete is done.

Instead, focus your energy like a laser. A laser doesn’t light up the whole room; it targets one single point. Your morning should be the same: put all your mental energy into one task. Not three, not ten—just one. Ask yourself, “If I could only do one thing today, what would it be?” This approach isn’t about adding more to your day, but about removing the clutter and simplifying your routine as much as possible.

Set up your environment the night before. If your main task is writing, have your computer ready at your desk. When you wake up, everything is set, and you can get started right away. No barriers, no excuses. Once you finish that important task, you’ll feel lighter, less stressed, and more relaxed for the rest of the day. Even if unexpected things come up, you’ve already done what matters most.

Trying to do too much at once only scatters your energy. Instead of giving 100% to one thing, you end up giving 5% here, 10% there, and nothing gets done well. Focus on one thing, finish it, then move on to the next.

Move Your Body Every Day

The second key is daily physical activity. Go for a walk, get some fresh air, or take your dog out. This simple habit changes everything. Sometimes you wake up groggy or with a headache, but a bit of fresh air and the sound of birds can reset your mind. If you live near nature, that’s great. If not, you can even set your alarm to play bird sounds in the morning. There’s always a way to bring a bit of nature into your routine.

If you’re thinking about changing your environment, remember that moving to a new place can sometimes be cheaper and more comfortable than you expect. Many countries in Eastern Europe, Asia, or Latin America offer beautiful, affordable living. Sometimes a change of scenery is all you need to see things differently.

Visualize Your Success

The third key is to visualize your goals. Put reminders of your dreams where you can see them—on your phone’s lock screen, for example. If you dream of volunteering in Iceland, find out how to make it happen. For Europeans, working in Iceland for a few months is easier than you might think. The point is to look for ways to change your routines and habits to get closer to your dreams.

Use a Simple Note-Taking App

Another important habit is keeping a note-taking app. I use SimpleNote, but you can use Google Keep, Apple Reminders, or any app that works for you. Each week, write down ten important tasks—one for each day, plus a few extras for when you have more time. Doing ten meaningful tasks every week, consistently, will put you ahead of most people who try to do too much at once and then burn out.

Make these tasks part of your daily routine, like brushing your teeth. You wouldn’t skip your shower for a week, so don’t skip your daily task. This is part of your mental hygiene. If you don’t do it, you might look back at the year and feel like you haven’t accomplished much. Regular, small actions add up over time.

This idea is at the heart of Darren Hardy’s book, The Compound Effect. Even ten minutes a day adds up to over an hour a week. If you can, set aside your phone and other distractions during this time. Focus only on what matters.

Learn from Every Setback

Finally, see every twist and turn in life as a lesson. When something goes wrong, don’t just say, “I’m unlucky.” Ask yourself what you can learn from it. How can you avoid the same mistake next time? Treat setbacks like bugs in a computer program—find a way to fix them so they don’t happen again.

One quote I love sums this up:

Doubt kills more dreams than failure ever will. —Suzy Kassem

And another that reminds me to enjoy the journey:

The path is beautiful; don’t worry about where it leads.

Worrying doesn’t solve anything. If your life is good, live fully in the present.
