How to Build Success by Waking Up at the Same Time Every Day

When it comes to routines, there’s one habit that stands above all the rest: being consistent, especially with your sleep. The real game-changer isn’t just about going to bed early or getting eight hours—it’s about sticking to the same bedtime and wake-up time every single day. Yes, even on weekends. Even when life throws you a curveball.

Let’s be honest, sometimes things come up in the evening. Maybe you go to bed later than planned. But the key is to keep waking up at your usual time, no matter what. If you’re tired, take a nap later. Personally, since I work from home, I can sneak in a 30- or 45-minute nap during my lunch break. If you work in an office, it’s trickier, but not impossible. I used to work in a building with showers in the basement—yes, showers! It was a big office tower with all sorts of amenities: umbrellas, a food court, security, parking, even conference rooms and a ping pong table. Sometimes I’d go for a quick run at lunch, then take a micro-nap in the shower area. It always gave me a boost.

But no matter what, I always woke up at the same time. I knew that if I let myself make an exception, my body would get confused. My internal clock would be off, and it would be much harder to get up the next morning. Your body gets used to a rhythm. If you keep it steady, you’ll often find yourself waking up five minutes before your alarm, even in winter when it’s cold and tempting to stay in bed—especially if your partner is still sleeping. It’s so easy to crawl back under the covers, but you have to remind yourself: you know what’s good for you. Get up, go to a café, and don’t give in to the temptation to go back to sleep.

For me, if I wake up late, it feels like my whole day is wasted. And as I said, it’s much harder to keep the rhythm if you allow yourself exceptions. If you say, “Just this once, I’ll sleep in,” it becomes easier to do it again. One exception leads to another, and soon you’ve lost your routine. Never leave room for exceptions. They don’t exist. If you’re exhausted, take a nap or go to bed earlier, but never wake up later. It’s for your own good.

That’s why Mondays are so tough for most people. The weekend breaks your routine, so getting back into the groove is hard. If you’ve been on vacation, it’s even worse. I remember when I was studying for my master’s in data science, I almost took a long break. If I had, it would have been so much harder to get back into the habit of studying. Long interruptions derail you.

Keeping the same rhythm isn’t just about productivity. It’s also about your health. Studies show that irregular sleep increases your risk of serious illnesses like cancer and cardiovascular disease. I talk about this in my book, Success Is Not Far Away. I wrote it first for myself, jotting down notes on my phone, then publishing and updating it regularly as new ideas come to me.

Here’s the bottom line: keep the habit of waking up at the same time every morning. It’s vital for your health and your body’s internal clock. It can even help prevent long-term health problems.

The setting includes a golden, flaky croissant placed on a black bamboo placemat, accompanied by a cup of frothy cappuccino in a deep brown ceramic mug. To the left, a white plate holds a serving of yogurt topped with dark berry jam. Next to the plate, there is an elegant glass of water with a decorative stem. A folded pink napkin with a wavy pattern rests beside the glass. Additionally, two whole passion fruits and a silver spoon complete the composition.
