How to Build New Habits Without Overthinking It

Building something new is not just about chasing big goals or ticking off achievements. It’s about the simple, sometimes small, act of doing something you’ve never done before. I often talk about goals and objectives, but let’s be honest: how often do we actually create a new habit, even just one, each day? Not as much as we’d like to think.

When you try something new, your brain forms fresh connections. These aren’t just random sparks; they’re the start of seeing the world in ways you never imagined. Suddenly, you notice things you would have missed before. You open doors to possibilities that were invisible until you took that first step.

Let me give you a personal example. I’m a pretty cerebral person. My background is in computer engineering, so I spend a lot of time in front of a screen. But if you asked me to make a rum baba (I don’t know why I always mention rum baba—maybe because my mother used to make it when I was a kid), or a strawberry charlotte, or a clafoutis, or even a ratatouille, I’d be out of my comfort zone. But that’s the point.

Maybe you love watching famous pastry chefs on YouTube. You see how they create their masterpieces, and you think, “Wow, that’s impressive. Maybe I could try that.” Even if you’ve never baked before, you decide to give it a go. Suddenly, you’re building a new habit. You’re not just following a recipe; you’re changing the way your brain works, and you’re opening yourself up to passions you never knew you had.

You only get one life. Sorry, you don’t have seven (at least, I don’t think so). That’s why it’s so important to try as many things as you can, right now, today. Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today. Remember this: you can’t expect your life to change if you keep doing the same things you’ve always done. If you just copy others, you’ll end up living someone else’s life, not your own.

Listen to yourself. Trust your instincts. Do things that speak to you, things that feel like you. I’m right here with you, 100%. I hope you really take this to heart, because building new habits and trying different things every day is what makes life richer and more interesting.

If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got. — Henry Ford

You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough. — Mae West
