The Secret Ingredient to Lasting Growth

Building Your Success: Why Learn Differently?

Have you ever felt lost about what to learn next, or how to move forward with your dreams? Many of us have a vision, a project, or a passion we want to bring to life. We try to make progress each day, but without a clear plan, it’s easy to feel like we’re just spinning our wheels.

What I’ve discovered is that the journey to achieving your dreams is split in two: half is about learning, and the other half is about doing. Imagine you wake up early, say at 6 or 6:30 in the morning, and dedicate an hour to learning something directly related to your dream or side project. Then, later in the day, you put that new knowledge into action. This approach turns learning into a kind of superpower, letting you immediately apply what you’ve just picked up.

I remember when I lived in Adelaide, South Australia. I would wake up before sunrise, step out onto my balcony, and dive into books—two, sometimes three—on topics connected to my passion project. After my day job, I’d come home and put those ideas into practice. Sometimes I watched videos, attended webinars, or listened to audiobooks. I took notes, used apps to record my thoughts, and made sure to revisit what I’d learned. This habit of active learning—absorbing and then applying—became my secret weapon.

There’s a big difference between passive and active learning. Passive learning is when you just consume content without doing anything with it. Active learning, on the other hand, is about taking what you’ve learned and using it right away. For example, if I saw a marketing poster, I’d ask myself how I could use that idea in my own business. When I was working on a food app, I’d notice features in other apps and think about how to adapt them for my project.

Being alert to the details of your daily life is crucial. Every routine, every object around you, can spark an idea or help you connect the dots in your project. The more you pay attention, the more opportunities you’ll find to grow and improve.

Another key is to capture your ideas. I used to use apps like Bear or Apple Notes to jot down thoughts. The tool itself doesn’t matter as much as the habit of taking notes and reviewing them. Consistency is what counts. Over time, these habits become automatic, and you rely less on motivation and more on routine.

Your environment also plays a huge role. Sometimes, the people you spend time with or the things you keep around you can either help or hurt your progress. If your environment is filled with distractions or negative influences, it can pull you away from your goals. On the other hand, a supportive environment makes it easier to build good habits and take action.

Often, the hardest things are actually the simplest—if you have the right techniques and tools. After years of experimenting, I’ve found that small changes in your daily routine, combined with active learning and a supportive environment, can speed up your progress more than you might expect.

Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out.

We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.
