When we talk about “soul rituals,” we’re not diving into anything mystical or complicated. These are simply small, positive habits—tiny actions you repeat every day that bring you comfort, joy, or a sense of well-being. Unlike negative routines that can hold you back or make you anxious, positive rituals help you grow, feel grateful, and even add a touch of freedom or spirituality to your day.

Think about your morning coffee. Maybe you always prepare it the same way: half a spoon of sugar, two spoons of milk, at the same time every day. That’s a ritual. Or perhaps every evening at 5 p.m., you treat yourself to a shortbread cookie before dinner. These little habits might seem trivial, but they can become anchors in your day—moments you look forward to, that help you feel grounded.

For me, my favorite ritual is a short walk every morning. I just walk around the block, which takes about ten minutes. It’s my way to start the day, and I love it. I’m lucky enough to live by the bay, so I get to watch the sunrise with palm trees in the background. It’s a simple pleasure, but it sets the tone for my whole day.

This idea of rituals isn’t new. Take Queen Elizabeth II, for example. She was known for her little routines. Every evening, she’d have a small glass of whisky and take a bath with a yellow rubber duck—apparently a gift from her grandchildren. These habits weren’t just quirks; they were sources of comfort and joy. And every day at 5 p.m. sharp, she’d have her tea, brewed just the way she liked it. These rituals were sacred to her, and they brought a sense of order and happiness to her life.

Most of us have one or two rituals we stick to religiously. It could be a glass of milk every morning, or listening to the radio while you eat breakfast. These aren’t just routines—they’re moments that make you feel good, things you wouldn’t want to skip.

Of course, not all rituals are positive. Sometimes, anxiety can lead to negative routines, like checking if the stove is off fifteen times or washing your hands over and over. These compulsive habits can drag you down and make life harder. But the “soul rituals” I’m talking about are the opposite—they lift you up.

For me, another ritual is reading every night before bed. I grab my Kindle and read in bed—it’s my little evening treat. It helps me relax and fall asleep. It’s not a guilty pleasure, since reading is good for you, but it’s something I look forward to every night.

The beauty of these small rituals is that they’re easy to keep, and they can make a real difference in your mood and your outlook. They’re not about perfection or productivity—they’re about giving yourself a moment of peace, happiness, or gratitude every day.

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.”
— Aristotle

“Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions.”
— Dalai Lama
