How to Build a Life That Matters Without Wasting Time

Building something for yourself and achieving your own goals is what truly makes a difference in life. Action is essential. If you never take action, if you’re not proactive in your decisions, or if you don’t even know what you really want, you’ll find yourself drifting. I know this feeling well—it’s normal not to always have a clear idea of what you want. But that’s exactly why you need to pause and reflect.

One of my favorite ways to do this is to sit in a café for an hour, just thinking and brainstorming. I ask myself: by next week, what do I want to have accomplished? Sometimes, the answer surprises me. We often think we want something because others influence us, but when we dig deeper, we realize it’s not what we truly desire.

For example, I once thought I absolutely needed a master’s degree in data science. I believed it would give me more recognition, a better title, and make immigration easier to countries like Japan, Canada, or New Zealand. But when I really thought about it, I realized I didn’t even want to work as a data scientist in a company. So why spend two years of my life on something that didn’t excite me? If you want to be a freelancer, the experience you gain is far more valuable than the degree itself.

Taking a step back is crucial. Sometimes, you just need to sit somewhere quiet with a notebook and pen and ask yourself: What do I really want to achieve? What do I want to build? This kind of reflection helps you move forward faster and make better decisions, instead of wasting years on something that doesn’t matter to you.

Recently, I took a short vacation. Even if you’re working remotely or have a regular job, changing your environment and taking a break gives you a fresh perspective. My girlfriend and even my family sometimes tease me for taking these breaks, but it’s important to make your own choices. After a week away, I come back recharged and clear about my direction.

Life is too short to make choices that don’t excite you. You need to make the right decisions as soon as possible. Taking breaks and reflecting is what makes all the difference. That’s my suggestion to you: don’t be afraid to pause, step back, and really think about what you want.

The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.

— Chinese proverb

Don’t put off what you want to do. If you start today, in twenty years you’ll be glad you did. The same goes for your success, your happiness, and your wealth. Take action now. I believe in you, so believe in yourself. Life is short—go for it. Success is worth it.
