How to Build a Legendary Life Without Wasting Your Time

Have you ever stopped to think about how you spend your time? Not just in a vague, “I should be more productive” way, but really questioned whether the hours you invest each day are building the life you want? I’m writing this from a hotel room in Melbourne, looking out at a beautiful view, and it struck me how much our daily choices shape our future.

We often forget that time is the only resource we can never get back. If you waste five minutes, or worse, an hour on something that brings you nothing—no joy, no knowledge, no progress—that hour is gone forever. Imagine watching a movie that bores you, or scrolling endlessly on your phone. That’s time you could have used to make yourself happier, learn something new, or even earn money that could buy you more freedom later.

Sometimes, even if an hour isn’t enjoyable, if it brings you closer to your goals or gives you the means to invest in yourself, it’s worth it. For example, maybe you don’t love jogging, but you know it’s good for your health. Or maybe you take on a coaching session that pays well, and that money lets you treat yourself or your loved ones to a special experience, or invest in your own growth.

The point is, investing in yourself isn’t always about immediate returns. Sometimes it’s about using your time in a way that sets you up for a better future. I paid a bit more to stay in a nice hotel, not just for comfort, but because it helps me use my time better. I get more done here than I would at home. That’s an investment.

But you have to keep checking in with yourself. Ask: Am I enjoying what I’m doing? Is this moving me forward? If the answer is yes, great. If not, it’s time to change something. Don’t settle for a life that feels like a waste. You deserve better.

Mistakes are part of the process. If you never make mistakes, you never grow. Every error is a step up to the next level. You can’t reach the top floor without climbing the stairs, and sometimes you trip. That’s normal. The real learning comes from doing, not just from watching videos or reading books. Passive learning keeps you stuck on the ground floor. Active learning—trying, failing, adjusting—takes you higher.

There will be tough times. Everyone faces their own “crossing the desert” moment, where you feel lost and want to give up. But that’s exactly when you need to keep going. Most people quit right before they reach their goal. Don’t be one of them. Even if you lose money, face setbacks, or feel like everything is against you, keep moving. You’re stronger than you think.

And don’t wait for the “perfect” moment to start. It doesn’t exist. Five years from now, you might have even less time, more responsibilities, and more reasons to delay. The best time to start is always now.

Change your mindset. Sometimes, the only thing holding you back is the way you see things. If you believe you can’t, you won’t. But if you start asking yourself, “What if the answer was always yes?” you open doors you didn’t even know were there.

Don’t be afraid to ask. If you don’t ask, the answer is always no. Whether it’s for an upgrade at a hotel, a free dessert at a restaurant, or a new opportunity, just ask. The worst that can happen is you get a no—which is exactly what you’d get if you never asked in the first place. But sometimes, you’ll get a yes, and that can change everything.

This applies to your own self-talk, too. If you keep telling yourself negative things, your days will reflect that. Instead, act like the main character in your own story. Tell yourself, “I’m going to make it. I’m the best.” Even if it feels a bit silly at first, it works.

Ask yourself positive questions. Instead of worrying about what could go wrong, ask, “What if everything goes right?” What if you really can get that job, earn that money, or meet that person? The more you ask, the more possibilities you create.

So, next time you hesitate, remember: asking opens doors. Not asking is the same as getting a no. There are no stupid questions, especially when it comes to your own growth. Be bold. Take risks. Keep moving forward.
