How to Break Old Habits Without Falling Behind in a Changing World

There’s something I feel deeply about: the need to break away from old habits and ways of thinking. The world has never demanded so much from us—not just in terms of effort, but in how we invest ourselves, how we learn, and how we adapt.

Not so long ago, the path was clear: study hard, get good diplomas, and find a stable job where you’d spend the next 20, 30, or even 40 years. That was the dream. Today, things have changed. Studying at university is no longer the only—or even the best—option for everyone. Sure, if you want to be a doctor, a surgeon, or a judge, you need those degrees. But for most of us, learning by ourselves, being curious, and training online has become just as important, if not more.

Everything changes so quickly now. People want to try different careers in their lifetime. You might be an engineer today, run a café tomorrow, and maybe become a vet the day after. Of course, some jobs still need years of study and dedication, but the idea of touching many things, of being a “jack of all trades,” is exciting. It opens your mind to things you’d never have imagined.

Ask your parents or grandparents, and you’ll see how different their lives were. So, what should you do today? The answer is simple: keep an open mind and learn how to learn. Make curiosity your art. Research, question, and dig deeper. With artificial intelligence, you can find almost any information you want. Tools like ChatGPT, Claude, or Mistral put knowledge at your fingertips. This means you can do so much more than before.

But don’t just try to be clever for the sake of it. If you want to create something new, make sure it’s something you care about—and something people actually want. If you start a business and build something “smart” that nobody needs, what’s the point? What matters is building something that lasts, something that can become your empire. And remember, empires aren’t built in a year. It takes time. If you spend one or two hours every single day, regularly and consistently, you’ll see the difference. That’s what I wish for you.

Sometimes, you’ll feel lost or unsure. That’s normal. But if you keep going, if you’re consistent, everything else will follow. It’s all about regularity and perseverance. Look at anyone who’s succeeded—they’re usually the ones who didn’t give up. But there’s a difference between perseverance and stubbornness. Stubbornness is when you keep going even though it’s clearly not working. Perseverance is when you see a glimmer of hope, a light at the end of the tunnel, and you keep pushing because you know you’re close.

Being resilient is a virtue. Stubbornness, not so much. If something doesn’t work, pivot. Change your angle. For example, if you have a business for all pet owners, but it’s not working, maybe focus just on fish owners or people with aquariums. Sometimes, narrowing your focus is the key.

You also need to know exactly who you’re talking to. If you’re creating a product or content, imagine your ideal customer—your “avatar.” Give them a name, a background, hobbies, likes, dislikes, even what they eat or wear. The more complete your avatar, the better. Picture them in front of you when you write or create. Ask yourself: What would Léopol or Amélie think? What would they do on your website? This helps you make your message clear and personal.

If your product is for football players, maybe call your avatar Julien or Ronald, not Charles-Edouard. It has to fit. Think about what your avatar loves, what makes them tick, and build everything around that.

You can use a real friend as inspiration, or just invent someone. Add details: their age, job, family, pets, style, everything. The more real they are in your mind, the easier it is to create something that speaks to them.

Life is short. You have to move forward, step by step, because life won’t wait for you. If you do what you love and know what your audience wants, you’ll go far. Passion is essential. And if you’re a freelancer or independent, knowing your avatar is even more important. Build for them, talk to them, and success will follow.
