How to Break Free From the Limits of Your Environment

Have you ever noticed how your environment quietly shapes your beliefs about what is possible? Many people unconsciously set boundaries for themselves, thinking, “I’ll never be able to do that,” simply because they identify with the average of those around them. If you spend your days surrounded by people who don’t aim high, it’s easy to believe that their limits are your own. The truth is, the only real limit is the one you set for yourself.

I’ve learned that it’s essential to remind yourself that anything is possible. Changing your environment, even temporarily, can help you see beyond the invisible walls you’ve built. For example, I’m writing this from a hotel room in Sydney’s Hilton on George Street. Even though I live in a nice apartment in Sydney, I sometimes book a hotel room for a weekend to reset my mind and give myself permission to think bigger. It’s a ritual I try to repeat every three months—a kind of “hermit weekend”—where I disconnect from everything, turn off all notifications, and focus on what I want to achieve, without any self-imposed limits.

This time, my hermit weekend is just a single day, from 3 PM Saturday to 3 PM Sunday. Even in this condensed version, the effect is powerful. I switch off, sit in a comfortable chair, and look out at the city skyline. The Westfield Tower stands out, even through the fog. The change of scenery, the silence, and the comfort of a new space help me realize that the boundaries I thought were real are just in my head.

The only limit to our realization of tomorrow will be our doubts of today. — Franklin D. Roosevelt

When you step into a new environment, you give yourself permission to dream bigger. I love taking notes in a beautiful notebook, brainstorming ideas, and letting my mind wander. Sometimes, a simple change—like a different view, a new bathtub, or even a quiet moment in a hotel room—can spark new ideas and help you break free from old patterns.

It’s also important to surround yourself with people who inspire you, people who are already where you want to go. When you do this, you raise your own average. Each new connection, each new experience, opens more doors. It’s like moving up levels in a platform game—one step at a time, you reach new heights.

You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with. — Jim Rohn

I’ve noticed that the brands and things I choose reflect this philosophy too. I prefer quality that speaks for itself, not flashy labels. The best things are often the most discreet, quietly supporting you as you move forward.

So, give yourself permission to grow. Change your environment, even for a short time. Connect with people who lift you up. And remember, the only real limit is the one you set for yourself.
