How to Boost Motivation Without Relying on Willpower

Motivation and inspiration are often seen as two separate things, but in reality, they feed off each other. When you’re inspired by something, you naturally become motivated because you feel passionate. And when you’re motivated, you start to find inspiration everywhere. It’s a cycle that can either lift you up or leave you stuck, depending on how you manage it.

But here’s something we rarely talk about: your environment plays a huge role in this cycle. Most of us work at a desk at home, maybe facing a blank wall, or in a corner of the living room. Even if you’re working hard, you could be working much better—if only your surroundings supported you.

Think about countries that make entrepreneurship easier. People often say, “Sure, it’s harder in France, but some people still succeed.” That’s true. But imagine if those same people were in a place where the environment truly supported business—where everyone around you is driven, and success is the norm. In the US, for example, the culture pushes you forward, and the road to success feels more like a highway. Even if you’re doing well at your desk in front of a white wall, you could be doing even better if your environment was pushing you forward.

The good news? You can create this kind of environment for yourself. Sometimes, it’s as simple as putting on the right playlist to boost your mood and energy. I’ve often found myself at a party, loving the atmosphere, feeling like anything is possible. Then I go home, and it’s silent, gray, and I’m back in front of that blank wall. How can you expect to feel the same motivation and inspiration in both places? Sometimes, you just need to change your location to find the right energy.

Right now, I’m sitting somewhere beautiful—surrounded by nature, looking out over a stunning bay. I love sitting here, reading, writing, just soaking in the view. It’s not the best spot for deep work on my laptop (the wind and lack of power outlets make that tricky), but it’s perfect for creativity, inspiration, or solving a tough problem. When I need to focus deeply, I go to a coworking space or a library. I used to spend a lot of time at Pyrmont in Sydney, near Darling Harbour, or at Hub Australia in Melbourne. These places are designed for focus, and being around other people who are working hard helps me stay on track.

You need to find the environment that works for you. It’s like a tree: it can grow in poor soil, but if the soil is rich and perfect, it will grow faster and stronger. The same goes for us. If you put yourself in the right place, you’ll thrive.

“You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”
—Jim Rohn

If you want to go further, start by improving your standards and your lifestyle. Find a place that makes you feel good. For me, it’s being near water, in the sun, surrounded by trees. That’s where I feel my best.

I believe in you. Even if you’ve taken every course out there, there’s always something new to learn. I read a lot, I test things myself, and I only share what truly works for me. My advice changes as my life changes, and that’s how it should be.

The best time to take action is now. Start improving your environment and your habits today. Sit somewhere that inspires you, even if it’s just for a few minutes. You’ll feel the difference.
