We often talk about happiness and personal growth, but there’s one thing that’s always true: your environment changes everything. The place you find yourself in—your surroundings—can shift your direction, your mindset, and even your vision of what’s possible.
Think about it. Sometimes you walk into a café, a hotel, or a restaurant and you just feel good. The atmosphere lifts you up. So why not create that same feeling in your own apartment or house? People always have excuses: “It’s not possible,” “It’s too expensive,” and so on. But if you look closer, there are always ways to make it work.
If money is tight, start by seeing where you can save. Maybe pause your internet subscription for a couple of months. If you have a phone plan with hours you don’t use, check if you can switch to a cheaper one or pause it for a while. The same goes for TV subscriptions, streaming services like Netflix, or even your electricity or gas bills—see if you can cut back for a month. Sometimes you can charge your devices at work or share costs with family. There are always options.
Take your daily coffee, for example. I used to buy a flat white every day. That’s about 4 euros a day, 20 euros a week, almost 80 euros a month. That’s enough to buy a new table for your home, or maybe some plants if you like greenery. You can find nice plants for 20 euros at Ikea, and they really change the feel of a room.

As you improve your environment, you’ll notice you feel better. I’m a big fan of minimalism—the less stuff you have, the better you feel. Even with things like fruit at home, less is more. Mattresses can be expensive, but I love sleeping on a futon. Maybe you’d like that too, or even just sleeping on the couch sometimes. There are always possibilities.
A lot of our choices come from our upbringing and the way we were taught to see things. Often, our lifestyle was chosen for us—where we live, even our jobs, were shaped by our parents or our childhood. But that doesn’t mean it’s really our life. Sometimes it just doesn’t fit who we are. It’s never too late to change, to move somewhere else, to create a new environment. Your life is yours. You don’t have to live to please others—you have to live for yourself.
