Paying attention to what we say, what we do, and even what we think is more important than we often realize. Our thoughts, our actions, and our words are not just reflections of who we are—they shape us and influence how others see us. If we speak poorly, that negativity will show in our personality. On the other hand, if we speak kindly, act positively, or think in a more professional way, we project those qualities too.

This is why it matters so much to express ourselves clearly, to carry ourselves well, and to think carefully. When we know where we want to go in life, and we align our thoughts, our words, and our posture with that goal, we put ourselves on the right path. It’s hard to reach a specific goal if we hold on to old habits—whether it’s the way we speak, the way we stand, or the way we think.

If our behavior doesn’t match the person we want to become, then our behavior will always hold us back. We are, in many ways, the sum of our actions. So, to succeed, we need to change our behavior first, instead of hoping for success while keeping the same negative or unhelpful habits.

Ask yourself: How can I achieve something excellent if I don’t change my behavior? If I don’t, my habits will slow me down. As I mentioned, our words, our language, and our posture all have the same effect. If we keep a bad posture or keep acting in the same old way, we can’t expect to get something different out of life.

Sometimes, these habits come from our upbringing, or maybe they’re just little language tics we’ve picked up over time. But if you want to be, say, a professional speaker, you need to work on these things. There are many areas in life where everything needs to be in alignment. When we take this seriously, success becomes much simpler.

We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.

— Aristotle

Your actions speak so loudly, I cannot hear what you are saying.

— Ralph Waldo Emerson
