How to Aim Higher Without Fear of Failing

Have you ever caught yourself thinking, “If only I could just manage this little thing, that would be enough”? Maybe you’re considering starting an online business and you tell yourself, “If I could just make a thousand euros a month, I’d be happy.” It’s so common to set small goals, especially when we’re not feeling confident. We’re afraid to dream bigger, to want more. But here’s the truth: dreaming big is not about being greedy or unrealistic. It’s about giving yourself permission to reach further and removing the limits you’ve set for yourself.

When you set the bar low, you automatically put a ceiling on what you can achieve. If your goal is to make a thousand euros, you’ll probably stop pushing once you get there. Going beyond that will feel much harder, because in your mind, you’ve already “made it.” You might even start to believe you don’t deserve more. This is a trap that keeps so many people from growing.

The only real limits are the ones we create in our own minds. We all have the potential to do much more than we think, but it starts with the right mindset. If you aim for the moon, you might end up in orbit. But if you aim for Mars or even Pluto, you might actually reach the moon—and that’s already much further than you would have gone otherwise. The higher you aim, the further you’ll go, even if you don’t hit your original target.

This isn’t just a nice metaphor. It’s a way of thinking that can change your life. The boundaries we see are often just mental habits, shaped by our environment and the people we spend time with. If you want to grow, you need to stretch those boundaries. One of the best ways to do this is to surround yourself—physically or virtually—with people who have already achieved what you want. Watch their talks, read their biographies, listen to their stories. If you can, travel to places where your field is thriving. Sometimes that means going to conferences in the US, or maybe in Asia, depending on your industry.

Time is your most precious resource. Money comes and goes, but time never returns. Instead of asking, “How can I make more money?” ask, “How can I save time? How can I work smarter, not harder?” Sometimes, this means changing your habits, your environment, or even your country. If you keep doing what you’ve always done, don’t expect new results.

Right now, I’m writing this from a gallery near the Sydney Opera House. Australia is already ahead in many ways compared to France, Switzerland, Belgium, or Spain, but it’s not always the best place for every business. For some, Silicon Valley or even Dubai might be better. It all depends on where your market is and where the best people in your field are. If you want to be a top chef, maybe France or Japan is the place to be. If you’re into tech, the US is still leading. For manga or animation, Japan and South Korea are unbeatable. The point is, find out where your field is thriving and connect with those people, even if it’s just online at first.

Ask yourself: Who do I need to be around, virtually or in person, to reach my goals? What environment will push me to think bigger? The more ambitious your goals, the more you’ll grow. Don’t be afraid to have eyes bigger than your stomach when it comes to your dreams. That’s how you break through your old limits.
