Have you ever noticed how easy it is to get distracted these days? You might be sitting in a café, or just doing your grocery shopping, and suddenly your mind is racing with a thousand things you need to do. “I have to call this person, reply to that message, answer that email…” And with our phones, it’s even worse. We jump from one app to another, replying to a text, then quickly answering an email, then checking a reminder, and before we know it, we haven’t really finished anything.

It’s the same story when you’re waiting somewhere. Maybe you’re charging your laptop and your phone at the same time, trying to do something else, and then you get a call. You step out to answer, and when you come back, you can’t even remember what you were doing. It’s so easy to forget things because you’re not really present—you’re scattered everywhere, and in the end, nothing gets done.

But here’s the thing: it’s important to take back control. Decide, “This is what I’m doing right now.” Once it’s done, then you can move on to the next thing. But not before. This is about discipline, about giving yourself some basic rules, a bit of guidance. Tell yourself, “I need to finish this first. Only when it’s done can I move on.” If you stick to this, you’ll see—you’ll get so much more done, and it will really change your life.

The real secret of people who succeed more than others isn’t that they’re smarter or luckier. It’s that they focus on one thing at a time. They become almost obsessed with the task at hand, and only when it’s finished do they allow themselves to move on. If you’re always jumping from one thing to another, you end up doing nothing well.

Even now, as I’m writing this, my phone lights up with a notification. If I let myself get distracted, I’d lose my train of thought. That’s why it’s so important to say, “One thing at a time.” Maybe you need to turn off your notifications, put your phone on silent, or just ignore the messages for a while. Finish what you’re doing first. Only then move on.

Think about it: how many times have you put your glasses down somewhere, then forgotten where they are because you got distracted by something else? You end up searching for them, getting sidetracked, and losing even more time. This is what happens when you try to do too many things at once—you lose yourself in your own life.

So, the basic principle is simple: one thing at a time. It will clear your mind, help you see things more clearly, and, honestly, it will change your life.

“Success is nothing more than a few simple disciplines, practiced every day.”
— Jim Rohn

“You will never reach your destination if you stop and throw stones at every dog that barks.”
— Winston Churchill
