When it comes to getting things done, nothing beats the power of true concentration. If you want to do something well—really well—you need to focus on just one thing at a time. This is the secret behind not only mastering your craft but also freeing up more time for yourself. Trying to do everything at once only leads to average results and a constant feeling of being stretched thin.

The truth is, you can’t excel at many different things all at once. If you want to be proud of your work and still have time for yourself, you need to put all your energy into one area and do it to the best of your ability. This approach is much simpler for your mind. You can become obsessed with one thing, improve much faster, and eventually stand out as an expert in your field.

Think about doctors. Specialists are in much higher demand, earn more, and often have waiting lists that stretch for months. They focus on one area and become the go-to person for that specialty. General practitioners are important and skilled, but they are never seen in the same light as specialists.

Let me give you a concrete example. Imagine you work in web marketing. You create vlogs, post videos on social media like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, maybe even Snapchat, and you write articles or books. You do everything in the same field, but it’s impossible to do it all well. You need to specialize in one type of content. If you try to add video editing on top of that, you spread yourself too thin. Your energy is scattered instead of being focused, and your brain is constantly switching tasks.

Studies show that every time you switch tasks, it takes about 15 to 18 minutes to get back into the flow. If you stick to one task, you can master it much faster. It’s like the difference between a lamp and a laser. A lamp lights up the whole room, but its energy is spread out. A laser, on the other hand, focuses all its energy on a single point. That point is so powerful it can even cut through things. You want to be like the laser—focus all your energy on one thing and do it extremely well.

Concentrate all your thoughts upon the work at hand. The sun’s rays do not burn until brought to a focus.

— Alexander Graham Bell

This principle applies everywhere. Even in programming, if you focus on just one type of programming or one stack, you become the expert. Maybe you specialize in Node, C++, or a specific framework like React or Angular. You know everything about it, give talks, make videos, and people come to you for your expertise. It’s impossible to know everything if you try to cover too many areas. Specialize, don’t generalize.

This idea also connects to minimalism. Do less, but do it better. Even in your home, instead of having lots of cheap furniture, have just a few high-quality pieces. Instead of three phones, have one really good one. Instead of several laptops, have just one—the best you can get. Apply this to everything around you.

It’s not the daily increase but daily decrease. Hack away at the unessential.

— Bruce Lee

When you focus on less, you move faster and achieve more because you become a true specialist. This is how you reach excellence in your chosen field.

Success demands singleness of purpose.

— Vince Lombardi
