When we talk about rituals, we often think of big ceremonies or strict routines. But there’s a gentler side to rituals—small, positive habits that bring comfort, freedom, gratitude, or even a touch of spirituality to everyday life. These are what I call “soul rituals.” They’re not about forcing change or pushing yourself hard; they’re about creating moments that nurture your well-being and help you grow in a gentle way.

For example, maybe every morning you make a cup of coffee at the same time, with exactly half a spoon of sugar and two spoons of milk. Or perhaps every evening at 5 p.m., you treat yourself to a little shortbread before dinner. These small acts become anchors in your day, little moments of calm and pleasure that you look forward to.

For me, one of my soul rituals is a short morning walk. It only takes about 10 minutes, but it’s my way to start the day. I live by the bay, so I watch the sunrise with the palm trees in the background. It’s simple, but it fills me with peace and energy.

Thinking about rituals reminds me of Queen Elizabeth II. She had her own small routines that brought her comfort. Every evening, she would have a small glass of whisky and take a bath with a yellow rubber duck. Apparently, a painter who redecorated her bathroom noticed the duck, which was likely a gift from her grandchildren. It wasn’t just a bath; it was a moment of joy and humor in her day. She also had a strict tea ritual—at exactly 5 p.m., she would have a well-brewed cup of tea, no exceptions. These rituals gave her a sense of stability and lightness, even when life was demanding.

Soul rituals are usually simple and few—one or two a day, not dozens. They’re things you do religiously because you enjoy them. Maybe it’s drinking a glass of milk every morning or listening to the radio during breakfast. These moments become part of your rhythm and help you feel grounded.

It’s important to distinguish these positive rituals from negative ones. For example, if you’re anxious, you might have compulsive habits like washing your hands repeatedly or checking the stove multiple times. Those are rituals too, but they pull you down instead of lifting you up.

Soul rituals, on the other hand, are habits that support you, that make you feel good and help you move forward. For me, reading every night before bed is a soul ritual. I read on my Kindle in bed, and it helps me relax and sleep better. It’s a small pleasure, but it means a lot.

The key is to find your own soul rituals—those little habits that bring you comfort, joy, or peace. They don’t have to be big or complicated. Just simple moments that you look forward to and that help you grow with positivity.
