Resilient Living

Even on a crisp winter day with the sky impossibly blue above Dockland, I’m reminded how different our inner weather can be from what’s outside. The sun might be shining, but if my mindset is clouded, I feel it in my body—headaches, fatigue, a heaviness that lingers. Over time, I’ve realized that our mental state and physical health are deeply connected. The way we process events, especially difficult ones, shapes not just our mood but our overall well-being.

The Weight of Our Thoughts

It’s easy to overlook how much our thoughts affect us. When I’m frustrated or upset—maybe I’ve woken up late, or something’s gone wrong—I notice my energy drops. My head hurts, my motivation slips away. This isn’t just coincidence; it’s a direct result of how I’m perceiving what’s happening. Negative thoughts, if left unchecked, can erode both health and spirit.

Mastering our perceptions is a skill, like building a muscle. It doesn’t happen overnight. The real challenge is learning to accept that unpleasant events will come, and then deciding how to process them. Some people seem to bounce back instantly, moving on as if nothing happened. Others, myself included at times, find it harder to let go. We replay the moment, get stuck, and the negativity lingers.

Moving Forward

What’s helped me is practicing the art of moving forward. When something doesn’t go as planned—someone speaks to me harshly, or a project fails—I remind myself: my life is my own. I can choose what comes next. Instead of collapsing under disappointment, I focus on what I can do now. What’s the next step? How do I turn the page?

For example, I’ve been working on a food-tracking app called Mil Snap. It started as a personal project, born from my desire to eat better. The app uses artificial intelligence to analyze whether the food or drink you log is good for you, and it keeps a personal food journal. Before this, I worked on an open-source project called Lifefizer, but Mil Snap is a complete overhaul—new code, new approach, and a sharper focus on helping people like me make healthier choices.

I’m proud of what I’ve built, but the journey hasn’t been smooth. There have been setbacks, moments when nothing seemed to work, and times when I questioned whether it was worth continuing. That’s the reality of any project: there are highs and lows, and rarely is the path straightforward.

Staying Upright in the Storm

What matters most is refusing to let setbacks define you. When a storm hits—when a project stalls, or life throws something unexpected your way—you have a choice. You can let it knock you down, or you can stand tall and keep moving. I’ve learned to see each obstacle as a chance to grow, to stay confident and positive even when things are tough.

It’s tempting to compare ourselves to others, to think some people are just luckier or have it easier. But that’s not the point. Life isn’t always fair, and we don’t all start from the same place. What we can control is how we respond. Instead of complaining or getting stuck in what’s “not fair,” I focus on moving forward. The greatest gift you can give yourself is to keep walking, to keep seeking out new opportunities, no matter how many times you stumble.

Building a Resilient Mindset

Living more efficiently isn’t about squeezing more into every day. It’s about learning to savor the good moments, accept the bad, and keep moving between them with resilience. When you master your mindset, you unlock the ability to enjoy life more fully, recover faster from setbacks, and seize the opportunities that come your way.

If you’re interested in going deeper, I’ve created a workshop designed to help you build a beautiful, custom-fit life. I’ll guide you step by step, from where you are now to where you want to be. I hope you’ll join me on this journey.
