How I Found Freedom by Sticking to One Simple Daily Rule

There’s a saying I love: Discipline equals freedom. It comes from Jocko Willink, a former Navy SEAL. The phrase itself isn’t complicated, but it’s powerful. It speaks to me because it’s so true—when you set rules for yourself, you actually give yourself more freedom.

Think about it like this: imagine a city with streets. You can’t just walk through walls; you have to follow the streets. The city gives you a framework, and within that, you know exactly where you can go. It’s the same in life. When you set boundaries for yourself, you create a clear path. You know where you’re going, and everything else falls into place.

That’s what I want to share with you: the idea of building a framework for your life so you can move forward in the right direction. When you have a clear vision of where you want to go, the rest follows naturally. You don’t waste time hesitating or doubting yourself. You just move.

This is especially true for how you organize your days. If you plan your day in advance—deciding in the evening what you’ll do the next morning and throughout the day—you remove so much uncertainty. You don’t have to make decisions on the spot, which can be exhausting. The more choices you have to make, the more your attention drops and your fatigue rises.

But when you’ve already mapped out your day, everything runs smoothly. You just follow the plan you set for yourself. It’s like preparing everything “just right” (as we say in French, au petit oignon). When your work is already “chewed up” for you, it’s so much easier to get things done.

So, here’s my simple advice: organize your next day the night before. Make it your action plan. You’ll notice a real difference. Your work will be ready for you, and you’ll move through your day with much more ease. This small habit has completely changed my daily life, and I’m sure it can do the same for you.

Discipline equals freedom. — Jocko Willink
