How I Built a Simple Routine That Actually Made Me Succeed

We all want to succeed, but the path to real progress is often hidden behind a mountain of distractions and unnecessary tasks. Over the years, I’ve tested countless methods, but the one that truly changed my life is surprisingly simple. Let me share how I built a routine that actually works—and why it’s less about working harder and more about working on what matters.

The Power of a Stable Routine

Every morning, I wake up at 5:30 AM. It wasn’t easy at first—building a routine never is. The hardest part wasn’t getting up early, but stabilizing my sleep schedule. Once I set a fixed bedtime (10:30 or 11 PM every night), my body adjusted. Now, I wake up naturally, often just before my alarm rings. That’s when I feel my best—because my body is in sync with my routine.

Sleep and success are more connected than we think. If you don’t sleep well, you won’t have the energy to tackle new challenges. Your body just won’t be ready. That’s why I always say: before you chase success, fix your sleep.

Bulletproof Success: The “One Thing” Method

Let’s break down a typical day. We all have 24 hours. Subtract 8 hours for sleep, another 8 for work if you’re employed, and more time for commuting, eating, showering, and other basic needs. What’s left? Maybe 5 or 6 hours, if you’re lucky.

How you use those hours is everything. Most of us fill our days with endless to-do lists, but not all tasks are created equal. Being busy isn’t the same as being productive. The real question is: What’s the one thing you can do today that will make the biggest difference?

I use a simple task manager (you might use Todoist, Google Tasks, or something else). Every morning, I look at my list and ask: If I could only do one thing today, what would have the most positive impact on my life or work? Most tasks are just reminders—nice to do, but not life-changing. The key is to find that one task that moves you forward.

Energy Management: Know Your Peak

I’m at my best in the morning, right after I wake up. No one is around to distract me—my friends, family, and colleagues are all still asleep. I have zero mental load and can focus all my energy on what matters most.

If I wait until the evening, my energy drops and unexpected problems pile up. That’s why I always tackle my most important task first thing. If you want to get real results, match your priorities to your energy levels.

The Value of Your Time

Imagine your time is worth €300 an hour. Would you spend it mowing the lawn or sending thank-you emails? Probably not. You’d focus on the tasks that actually move the needle. This mindset helps you see which tasks are truly valuable and which are just “sand”—the little things that fill your day but don’t change your life.

There’s a classic experiment: if you fill a jar with sand first, there’s no room for the big rocks. But if you put the rocks in first, the sand fits around them. The rocks are your most important tasks. Do them first.

“You can do anything, but not everything.”
— David Allen

Don’t Let the Small Stuff Take Over

Most of our to-dos are just reminders so we don’t forget things. But they’re not important. Focus on the one thing that will really make a difference. Sometimes, it’s starting a new project, investing in yourself, or building an online community. Other times, it’s just finishing that one big task you’ve been putting off.

The rest—checking currency rates, updating your website footer, paying bills—can wait. They’re sand, not rocks.

Take Action Now

The best time to act is always now. Don’t put off what you know you need to do. Success isn’t about doing more; it’s about doing what matters, when your energy is highest.

“The key is not to prioritize what’s on your schedule, but to schedule your priorities.”
— Stephen R. Covey

Key Takeaways

Ask Yourself:

What’s the one thing you can do today that will truly move you forward? Are you filling your days with sand, or are you making space for the rocks?
