Build or Buy the Foundation of a Dating Platform
In 2017, I compared several ready-made packages for creating a dating website. The product names, prices, and some of the advice have aged. A list of old vendors no longer supports a good technical decision.
The underlying question remains useful: should I buy an existing foundation, compose managed services, or build the platform?
I no longer look for the package with the longest feature list. I look for the starting point that lets the team test the service without losing control of its data, security, and future changes.
Define the Core Before Comparing Options
A dating platform usually needs:
- accounts with identity checks appropriate to the risk;
- profiles and preferences;
- discovery or search;
- private messaging;
- reporting, blocking, and moderation;
- notifications;
- administration;
- data export and deletion.
How those flows work depends on the community. A local service, a professional community, and an app for vulnerable people should not share the same rules by default.
I write down the important journeys and risks before comparing technology. Without that work, I compare polished demos instead of solutions to the actual problem.
Four Starting Points
Ready-Made Dating Software
It can provide profiles, discovery, messaging, and administration quickly. It fits when its existing decisions match the service and the team can inspect the source, update process, and licence.
The risk appears when custom work modifies the core. Every update can become a difficult merge, and a simple feature in the demo may depend on several old modules.
I test one realistic customisation and one upgrade before committing to the package. That small exercise reveals more than a feature checklist.
A General Application Starter
A maintained framework and starter kit can provide accounts, sessions, interface foundations, and common application behaviour. The team then builds the dating domain.
This removes a large amount of initial work without inheriting every decision of an old dating product. The team still needs to design moderation, discovery, privacy, and operational tools.
This is often my preferred starting point because common infrastructure and product-specific logic remain easier to distinguish.
Managed Services
Authentication, media storage, messaging, search, or notifications can be delegated to specialised services.
This reduces some operational work but adds technical and commercial dependencies. I review pricing at higher usage, export capabilities, data location, customisation limits, incident history, and the exit procedure.
I do not assume that a service can be replaced later. I build and test the minimum export path while the system is still small.
Custom Development
Custom code gives the most freedom over the domain. It also creates the largest maintenance surface.
I reserve it for differences that matter to users or operations. Rewriting ordinary password handling or file storage does not automatically create a product advantage.
Custom development can still use maintained frameworks, libraries, and hosted infrastructure. It does not have to mean writing every layer from zero.
Compare Total Cost, Not Purchase Price
The listed price covers only part of the decision. I include:
- setup and hosting;
- customisation;
- upgrades and migrations;
- monitoring and backups;
- moderation and support;
- security review;
- the cost of changing provider;
- the time required to understand the code.
Cheap software can become expensive if nobody can update it. A more expensive managed service can be rational if it removes an operational duty that the team cannot support.
I do not attach a universal schedule or budget to a dating platform. Scope, security requirements, expected quality, and team experience change the result too much.
Verify Ownership and the Exit Path
I want to know who controls:
- product-specific source code;
- the database and its backups;
- photos and other media;
- the domain name;
- infrastructure accounts;
- signing keys and secrets;
- analytics data;
- the export procedure.
The promise that I own my data needs evidence in the form of a complete, documented export. I test that path before I need it.
I also check what happens when the supplier closes, changes price, or stops supporting a dependency. A contract does not replace a technical exit path.
Treat Security as a Procurement Requirement
A dating platform processes personal data and private conversations. I review authentication, authorisation, encryption, logging, dependencies, deletion, and incident response.
The OWASP Application Security Verification Standard can provide a common set of testable controls for procurement and development. For services under the GDPR, the European Commission’s guidance on data protection by design and by default also supports minimising data and access from the beginning.
I do not accept a broad claim that software is secure. I ask which versions are supported, how vulnerabilities are corrected, and which tests can be repeated.
My Preference for an Initial Product
For a first version, I often choose a modular monolith on a maintained framework, with managed services for infrastructure that is difficult to operate. I keep matching logic, trust rules, and data decisions inside the product.
Ready-made specialist software can still be appropriate when its architecture, licence, and maintenance history are verifiable. I test the hardest expected change before making a long commitment.
The right choice is not the one that avoids all development. It is the one that helps the team learn quickly while preserving a clear path to maintain, secure, and extend the service.
