Adopt This Simple Rule or Stay Stuck in Old Habits

We all want to feel fulfilled, happy, and productive. But what if I told you that there’s a simple rule—rarely applied—that can change your life starting tonight? This isn’t about some magic formula. It’s about understanding what truly matters to you, focusing on it, and organizing your days so you can actually reach your goals.

What Does Success Really Mean?

Success is personal. For some, it’s about career achievements; for others, it’s about family, health, or simply feeling good every day. The real measure is whether you’re reaching the goals that matter to you. If you’re doing that, you’re already successful in your own way.

But here’s the thing: once you reach a goal, don’t just stop and rest on your laurels. Set new goals. That’s what keeps you moving, curious, and alive. The process of learning, achieving, and setting new challenges is what brings growth and satisfaction.

Your Environment Shapes Your Results

Most people don’t realize how much their environment affects their productivity and well-being. The people around you, the places you work, even the time of day you do things—all these factors can help or hinder your progress.

For example, I love writing in parks or cafés. I might not write faster, but I write better. The quality of my work jumps a few levels just by changing my surroundings. The same goes for sleep: if you sleep well, you feel better and can focus more. Concentration is key. Every time you get distracted, it takes about 15 to 17 minutes to get back into deep focus. That’s a lot of wasted time if you’re not careful.

Discipline and Routine: The Hidden Power

How you organize your days matters. If your days have no structure, it’s easy to lose discipline. That’s why, even if you dream of being your own boss or starting a side project, it can help to keep a regular job for the structure it brings. Without it, you might start waking up later, going to bed later, and before you know it, your whole routine falls apart. You end up tired, unmotivated, and your productivity drops.

Having a job—even a simple one—forces you to stick to a schedule. If you have to be at work at 7 or 8 in the morning, you’ll get up early. But when you work for yourself, it’s easy to let things slide because no one is waiting for you. The same logic applies to catching a flight: you’ll wake up at 4 a.m. if you know you’ll lose money or miss your connection otherwise. But for your own projects, the urgency often disappears.

Protect Your Energy and Mindset

It’s not just about where you work or how you schedule your day. Your mindset matters. If you’re tired, negativity creeps in more easily. You get angry faster, lose motivation, and your confidence takes a hit. That’s why it’s so important to take care of your health, get enough sleep, and keep a positive attitude. When you feel good, you do better work and believe in yourself more.

Make Starting Easy

One simple trick: make it as easy as possible to start your tasks. Remove any friction at the beginning. For example, if you want to write, have your text editor open and ready when you wake up. Close all distracting apps. I use a little tool called Amphetamine to keep my computer awake, and apps like SimpleNote for distraction-free writing. The easier it is to start, the more likely you are to get things done.

Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out.

Don’t Wait for the Perfect Moment

Life is short. Don’t put off what you want to do today. There will never be a perfect time. Start now, even if it’s just a small step. Find the tools and routines that work for you, and stick to them. The sooner you start, the sooner you’ll see results.

The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.
